About Jack

Jack Wallen is many things: a writer, an author, a playwright, a tech journalist, an actor, a film maker, a non-binary human. If you were to ask him to sum Jack up in a single word, that word would be artist. Jack’s entire life has been dedicated to art in its many forms.

But along the way, something strange happened: Jack found his purpose, and that purpose is to help. In all of his endeavors, his goal is to try and make life a bit easier for others; whether that’s teaching, assisting, or simply entertainment as a distraction from the day-to-day grind that has become of life.

His philosophy toward life can be summed up by the old adage, a rising tide lifts all boats. If Jack can be a part of that rising tide, then life has meaning.

On a lighter side…

Jack Wallen is what happens when a Gen Xer mind-melds with present day snark. Jack is a seeker of truth and a writer of words with a quantum mechanical pencil and a disjointed beat of sound and soul.

Although he resides in the unlikely city of Louisville, Kentucky, Jack likes to think of himself more as an interplanetary traveler, on the lookout for the Satellite of Love and a perpetual movie sign…or so he tells the reflection in the mirror (some times in 3rd person).

Jack is the author of numerous tales of dark, twisty fiction including the I Zombie series, the Reapers and fEaR series, the Violent Delight series, the Suicide series, the Klockwerk Movement, the Fringe Killer series, Shero, The Nameless Saga, and much more. He’s also the author of the Schrödinger The Existential Cat series. You can check out all of Jack’s fiction on his author page here in the Jackverse.

The path to becoming a professional writer was certainly the one less traveled for Jack. Originally, Jack’s artistic bent led him to a career as an actor. Jack did it his way. Working on Broadway and with regional and Shakespeare theatres across the country, Jack is proud to have held his own as an actor for over twenty years.

Twenty freakin’ years. Am I really that old?

Oh wait … third person.

Crap, where was Jack? Oh yes, he remembers.

But, as they say, all good things…

Before the economy had a chance to completely destroy the theatre arts, Jack decided to take his final curtain call during a production with the heralded Stage One Theatre for Young Audiences. It was, however, during that long career that Jack discovered he had a knack for the written word. His first, full-length novel was written between 2000 and 2003. That book, A Blade Away, eventually became his first published work. It didn’t take Jack long to fall in love with the creative process of writing and he followed that first book up with the cult-favorite, Shero.

It wasn’t until Jack woke up one summer morning with a simple question on his mind, that he would finally dive into the craft of horror fiction tooth and nail. That question, “What would it be like to transform into a zombie?”, led Jack to pen the first novel in the I Zombie series — I Zombie I. From there, Jack dove into the deeper waters of horror and has never looked back.

Since then, Jack has written in just about every genre imaginable, began a career as a playwright, and continued covering Linux and open-source for various publications, such as Linux.com, TechRepublic, ZDNET, The New Stack, DevOps.com, and many more.
